SINGAPORE : High Definition TV (HDTV) is the latest to hit the local broadcasting scene and Singaporeans have given it the thumbs-up. According to a survey by StarHub, 96 percent of those interviewed were satisfied with the picture quality, and 4 in 5 viewers were satisfied with the trial as a whole These figures were revealed by Information, Communications and the Arts Minister Dr Lee Boon Yang at the launch of StarHub's HDTV service on Thursday. The launch places Singapore as the first country in Southeast Asia to offer a commercial HDTV service. SingTel and MediaCorp plan to have a commercial HDTV launch later this year. Dr Lee added viewers can look forward to more Made-by-Singapore HD content this year. SINGAPORE: At least five years before HDTV takes off in S'pore ...

High-Definition TV (HDTV) services may take at least five years to take off with couch potatoes here, despite promising lifelike images four times sharper.

This was what the Media Development Authority (MDA) said yesterday. Its chief information officer, Mr Yeo Chun Cheng, told reporters that was the amount of time that may be needed to convince half the homes here to junk their old TV sets for new ones that tune in to sharper HDTV images.

He based his estimate on the take-up overseas.

The United States, for example, has between 40 and 50 per cent of homes on HDTV, after more than five years since the launch of HDTV services.

With its sharper images, HDTV promises realistic scenes, particularly for nature documentaries and programmes with computer-generated graphics.

LG's five new 1080p Time Machine plasma and LCD TVs with built-in DVRs

Like your digital video recorder and TV integrated do you? Well, be sure to check the third generation "Time Machine" line-up from LG just announced in Korea and heading our way sometime soon. All five of the new Full HD 1080p televisions feature dual integrated HD tuners allowing you to watch one channel while recording from the other or watch the two side-by-side should your ADD so require. They also feature USB 2.0 from which you can sling additional disk; good thing too since LG skimps with just a single 250GB 160GB disk drive in the unit. The new embedded-PVR sets are available as 50-inch (50PB3DR) and 60-inch (60PY3DR) plasmas or 37-inch (37LY3DR), 42-inch (42LY3DR), and 47-inch (47LY3DR) LCDs. LG doesn't provide any real specifications but we've already seen other sets announced from both the PY3D series of plasmas and LY3D series of LCDs.
